Alex Woods (SVI 2024)

Pianist/Coach

Alexander Woods is a pianist and educator living in the Twin Cities, MN. A versatile and collaborative musician, his passions include art song, instrumental & chamber works, choral music, contemporary piano repertoire, and a variety of jazz and popular styles. He strives to maintain an innovative perspective in his performances, seeking out new and old works from diverse genres and composers.

Woods is a Lecturer of Piano at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where he teaches class piano, applied lessons, and an honors colloquium exploring music and gender. He also plays piano at Central Presbyterian Church (St. Paul, MN) and Voices of Hope - Minnesota Prison Music Initiative. As a freelance pianist and vocal coach, he has worked at the University of Minnesota and Gustavus Adolphus College, along with various choirs, orchestras, and competitions in the Greater Twin Cities. Woods is currently a member of the Charles Gorczynski Tango Quartet, an ensemble dedicated to contemporary and traditional tango music on stage and in the studio.

As a recording artist, Woods's current projects include collaborations with flutist Tim Lane (Skyline Publications, Paper Route Press), a collection of solo piano compositions by Ivar Lunde Jr, Martin Stepper, and John Russo (CRS Inc.), and an album of tango quartet works by Charles Gorczynski (Caverns Records). Some of his recent and upcoming concert appearances include the MNSong Showcase at Source Song Festival (Minneapolis), a series of genre-crossing recitals with soprano Janani Sridhar (MN, WI, LA), and frequent performances with colleagues at UW-Eau Claire, including the First Fridays faculty concert series.

Woods completed his master's degree in Collaborative Piano at the University of Minnesota, earning the Rydell Fellowship in Accompanying & Coaching. He also holds bachelor's degrees in Music and Religious Studies from Pomona College, where he received the McCord Memorial Grant to fund summer music study at several festivals. His primary teachers include Timothy Lovelace, Lydia Artymiw, Genevieve Lee, and Ming Tsu.
