Charlie Rouse, Jr.
Senior Performing Arts Administrator

Charles “Chico” Rouse Jr. is a seasoned music business professional, producer, drummer, venue operator, and educator with more than 50 years of experience in the entertainment industry. Raised in the company of jazz legends as the son of the renowned saxophonist Charlie Rouse, and his mother, Esperanza Rouse, who was an accomplished dancer at the famous Cotton Club and Savoy Ballroom, Chico grew up immersed in the language of performance, touring, and artistic excellence. Over time, he fused that lived musical heritage with hands-on expertise in promotion, venue management, production, and civic entertainment development—most notably within the Asbury Park, New Jersey community.
As Founder and CEO of The Rouse Legacy Group, LLC, Chico established a platform dedicated to preserving and promoting the musical heritage of his family through educational and entertainment initiatives. His work through the company bridges legacy preservation with forward-looking programming, reinforcing his lifelong commitment to jazz history and community engagement.
Chico’s producing and promotional résumé spans more than 25 years and includes leadership of some of the Jersey Shore’s most visible cultural events. He produced the Asbury Park Jazz Festival for 18 years, the Long Branch Ocean Festival for 7 years, and the Red Bank RiverFest for 4 years. Throughout his career, he has worked with a wide spectrum of artists—from B.B. King to 50 Cent—demonstrating both musical range and broad industry relationships.
His impact on venue operations and revitalization is particularly significant. As General Manager of Convention Center and Special Events for the City of Asbury Park (1996–2002), Chico played a central role in the resurrection and restoration of the Asbury Park Convention Hall and Paramount Theater, helping return the Convention Center to viability as a destination for family entertainment, concerts, and major productions. During this period, he facilitated high-profile film, television, and live entertainment projects that brought national attention back to the city.
Among the key productions he coordinated at the Asbury Park Convention Hall were the Warner Bros. film City by the Sea (2002), starring Robert De Niro and James Franco, which filmed on location around Christmas 2000; and six episodes of HBO’s award-winning series The Sopranos, which he co-produced while on location at the Convention Hall. He also assisted in bringing Bruce Springsteen’s Christmas benefit concerts to the venue from 1996 to 2004—events widely recognized as a turning point in the city’s cultural and economic revival.
In addition to film and concert production, Chico promoted innovative and large-scale events such as March Metal Meltdown, which blended professional wrestling and heavy metal music, and hosted “The Horse Whisperer” event featuring the subject of Robert Redford’s film—an undertaking that required filling the hall with clay. He further facilitated a business partnership that brought professional basketball to the Asbury Park Convention Hall, expanding the venue’s programming beyond traditional concerts.
Beyond civic venues, Chico has owned and operated his own performance spaces and media platforms. He was the proprietor of “Chico’s House of Jazz and Blues” in Asbury Park, a venue designed to help bring jazz back to the Jersey Shore. He also produced programming for “FYI Vibes Radio,” further extending his influence into broadcast media. Additionally, he served as Entertainment Coordinator for 10 years for the Hilton Hotel Franchise and for the Count Basie Theatre, where he helped return the historic venue to the national concert circuit.
Through roles as promoter, producer, venue executive, business owner, and cultural advocate, Charles “Chico” Rouse Jr. has consistently combined artistic authenticity with operational leadership. His career reflects a rare blend of legacy stewardship, community revitalization, and large-scale entertainment production—rooted in jazz history yet expansive across genres, platforms, and decades.
